You are in the age of consumerism wherein you seem to be spending more than what you are earning.  It has become easier to swipe a credit card in exchange for some purchases, rather than to dip into your pocket and shell out some real cash.  The painful reality only sinks in every time you receive your monthly credit card statement and find out that, once again, you’ve overspent beyond your means and will have to work even harder or borrow some more to cover the loss.  If you’re in the middle of that cycle of dependency which makes you so reliant on credit cards and so into debt, the surest way of getting rid of credit card debt would be to address it one step at a time.

The first step is usually the most difficult one, and it is that of controlling the urge to spend.   You have to lessen your spending and limit your purchases to those which are most important.  Because you are going to spend an amount you haven’t even received or earned yet, even for the most important stuff like groceries or school supplies, you’ll have to get used to making a list and sticking to it.  Having a list of things you need is an effective way of getting rid of credit card debt.  It gives you a sense of direction and purpose which could limit, if not eliminate, the extra stuff you’re bound to pick up.  Everything about you would rebel at the idea of not being as spontaneous as you’d like, but the lifestyle change which incidentally comes for free would actually be good for you.

Speaking of a lifestyle change, this in fact is the next step on your way getting rid of credit card debt.  You have to make certain changes in the way you use your credit cards.  With everything around you receding except the amounts you owe some credit companies, it’s time to make every dollar count especially when you have to pay cash outright.  Live within your means.

Take it a step further, and make it a habit to pay your credit card bills on time.  Just as getting rid of credit card debt should start right now, pay your credit card statements before they’re due and not later when you don’t have the money anymore.  Late payments accumulate as higher interest rates and additional charges. Receiving your credit card statements early should enable you to plan and prepare ahead of time.

Always pay your monthly dues in full.  If you can make more than the monthly minimum payment on your credit cards then so much the better.  This means you are on your way to getting rid of credit card debt.  Make it a goal to make bigger monthly payments, and do them as frequently as you can to cut on interest rates and start reducing your outstanding balance.

How simple or how complicated these initial steps will mean to you all depends on how driven and determined you are to be getting rid of credit card debt and taking charge of your finances again.
